Objectives

  1. Discuss the biologic effects of radiation.
  2. Discuss recent adverse events which happened due to radiation overexposure of patients.
  3. Recognize the ‘safety zones’ in a room when radiation is being delivered to a patient, during an examination, when staff are required to remain in the room
  4. Demonstrate or discuss optimal fluoroscopy practices when performing a patient examination.
  5. Describe primary beam attenuation
  6. Discuss and demonstrate vertical collimations
  7. Describe natural and man-made sources of ionizing radiation and their sources
  8. Maintain the safest SID/OID during fluoroscopy in the R&F room and with the C-arm
  9. Understand and demonstrate radiation safety when operating a fluoroscope
  10. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of image intensifiers (IIs) when compared to flat panel detectors (FPDs)
  11. Describe how angling the x-ray tube affects radiation dose
  12. Explain how to properly set up and use a c-arm
  13. Understand the advantage of using the pediatric mode vs. the adult mode during pediatric fluoroscopy 
  14. Understand and describe magnification modes and the effect on radiation dose to the patient/staff
  15. Identify the advantages of the automatic brightness system (ABS)
