Virginia RN Required number of CE credits per year(s) | Effective August 1, 2013, continued competency regulations go into effect. These regulations will affect licensure renewals beginning August 1, 2015. For licensure renewal, RNs shall complete at least one of the following activities: Current specialty certification by a national certifying organization, as defined in 18VAC90-20-10. Completion of a minimum of three credit hours of post-licensure academic education relevant to nursing practice, offered by a regionally-accredited college or university. A board-approved refresher course in nursing. Completion of nursing-related, evidence-based practice project or research study. Completion of publication as the author or co-author during a renewal cycle. Teaching a nursing-related course resulting in no less than three semester hours of college credit or specialty certification. Teaching nursing-related continuing education courses for up to 30 contact hours. 15 contact hours of workshops, seminars, conferences or courses relevant to the practice of nursing and 640 hours of active practice as a nurse. 30 contact hours of workshops, seminars, conferences or courses relevant to the practice of nursing. |

CE for Specialty: Athletic Training | No continuing education is require. Licensees must renew every 2 years in each odd-numbered year in their birth month. |
CE for Specialty: Audiology/SLP | CE: 30 Contact Hours must be completed every two years. All Virginia licenses expire at the end of the calendar year. (December 31st.) Renewal date is based upon your initial date of licensure. |
CE for Specialty: Dietetics/Nutrition | There is no continuing education requirement. |

CE for Specialty: Massage Therapy | CE: 24 hours must be completed over a two-year renewal period. One hour must be in professional ethics. Renewal must be completed by the last day of licensee’s birth month. Renewal must be during even-numbered years if birth year is even, odd numbered years if birth year is odd. A minimum of 12 of the 24 hours shall be in activities or courses provided by an NCBTMB-approved provider. |
CE for Specialty: Medicine and Surgery | CE: 60 hours must be completed every 2 years; 30 must be Category 1; 30 may be Category 2 and shall address such areas as ethics, standards of care, patient safety, new medical technology, and patient communication. Licenses must be renewed every two years. |
CE for Specialty: Occupational Therapy | CE Requirements: Occupational Therapists (OT) and Occupational Therapy Assistance (OTA) must complete 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years. |
CE for Specialty: Pharmacy | 15 hours of continuing education must be completed annually by December 31. Home study must be approved by the board, ACPE, or Category 1 CME. ACPE-approved courses for Pharmacy Technicians end in the letter “T”. ACPE-approved courses pharmacists (only) end in the letter “P”. Courses ending in the letter “P” cannot be used to meet pharmacy technician CE requirements. |
CE for Specialty: Pharmacy Technician | 5 hours of continuing education must be completed annually by December 31st. Home study must be approved by the board, ACPE, or Category 1 CME. |
CE for Specialty: Physical Therapy | CE Requirements: PT and PTA licenses expire on December 31st of each even numbered year. 30 contact hours required biennially for PTs and PTAs. Type 1 face-to-face course minimum: PT: 15 hours, PTA: 10 hours. PTs holding certification to provide direct access without a referral shall include 4 hours in courses related to clinical practice in a direct access setting. No more than 15 hours can be from online courses for PTs and 20 hours for PTAs. |
CE for Specialty: Psychology | 14 hours of continuing education must be completed every renewal period. All licensees must complete a minimum of 1.5 hours in ethics, standards of practice or laws governing the profession of Psychology in Virginia. Licenses must be renewed annually by January 1st. |
CE for Specialty: Radiology Technology | CE per license: Radiologic Technologist: 24 hours Radiologic Technologist Limited: 12 hours Radiologist Assistant: 50 hours CE Course Requirements: Radiologic Technologist: 12 hours must be approved by the ARRT Radiologic Technologist Limited: All must be approved by the ARRT Radiologist Assistant: 25 hours must be approved by the ARRT Renewal happens every two years. |
CE for Specialty: Respiratory Therapy | 20 hours of continuing education are due biennially during odd years. |
CE for Specialty: Social Work | LSW Renewal: fifteen (15) hours social work continuing education. LCSW Renewal: thirty (30) hours social work continuing education. A minimum of two of those hours must pertain to ethics or the standards of practice for the behavioral health professions or to laws governing the practice of social work in Virginia. Social Work licenses expire every two years. |
