North Carolina RN Required number of CE credits per year(s) RNs and LPNs: For reinstatement or relicensure, a plan for continued competence and completion of one of the following is required: 1) National certification or recertification by a national credentialing body recognized by the Board. 2) 30 contact hours of continued education. 3) Completion of a Board approved refresher course. 4) Completion of a minimum of two semester hours of post-licensure academic education related to nursing practice. –OR–15 contact hours of continued education and one of the following: 1) Completion of a nursing project as principal investigator or co-investigator to include statement of problem, project objectives, methods, date of completion and summary of findings. 2) Authoring or co-authoring a nursing related article, paper, book or book chapter. 3) Developing and conducting a nursing continuing education presentation or presentations totaling a minimum of five contact hours, including program brochure or course syllabi, objectives, date and location of presentation, and approximate number of attendees. 4) 640 hours of active practice within previous 2 years.

CE for Specialty: Athletic Training 75 hours must be completed every 3 year renewal period. All licenses expire annually on January 31st.
CE for Specialty: Audiology/SLP CE: 30 Contact Hours must be completed each 3 year renewal period. Every 3 year renewal period ends on December 31st of the 3rd year.
CE for Specialty: Dietetics/Nutrition Continuing education required: Registered Licensed Dietitian: 75 hours                         Non-Registered Licensed Dietitian: 30 hours                 Provisional Licensed Dietitian: 15 hours Time frame: Registered Licensed Dietitian: 5-yr cycle                      Non-Registered Licensed Dietitian: Every 2 years                Provisional Licensed Dietitian: annually, from April 1st through March 31st All North Carolina licenses must be renewed by March 31st. Continuing education must be approved by the CDR.
CE for Specialty: Emergency Medical Services There are no continuing education requirements.
CE for Specialty: Laboratory Technology There are no Continuing Education requirements.
CE for Specialty: Massage Therapy CE: 24 Contact Hours must be completed over a two year renewal period. North Carolina licenses expire at the end of the calendar year, December 31st, every two years. All NCBTMB approved courses are accepted. Maximum of 12 hrs home study (distance education). Minimum of 3 hours ethics required.
CE for Specialty: Medicine and Surgery CE: 60 Contact Hours of Category 1 CME hours over a three-year period. The revised CME rules eliminate the requirement to report ANY Category 2 CME hours Licenses must be renewed every three years.
CE for Specialty: Occupational Therapy CE Requirements: Continuing Competence Activity (CCA) must be completed by June 30th of the renewal year.  CCA must be related to roles and responsibilities in occupational therapy and must serve to protect the public by enhancing the licensee’s continuing competence, in providing occupational therapy services. North Carolina occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants applying for license renewal shall document having earned a minimum of 15 points for approved continuing competence activities. Rule .0802(b) states for each renewal period, each licensee shall document completion of at least one contact hour (one point) of an ethics course related to the practice of occupational therapy. The one point may be included in the total of the required point total for the renewal period. Ethics is required for the 2015 renewal and every renewal thereafter.
CE for Specialty: Pharmacy 15 hours continuing education must be completed annually. Home study permitted. 8 live hours are required. ACPE-approved courses for Pharmacy Technicians end in the letter “T”. ACPE-approved courses pharmacists (only) end in the letter “P”.  Courses ending in the letter “P” cannot be used to meet pharmacy technician CE requirements.
CE for Specialty: Pharmacy Technician No continuing education is required.
CE for Specialty: Physical Therapy CE Requirements: Each PT licensee must accumulate 30 points and each PTA licensee must accumulate 20 points of continuing competence activities during the assigned reporting period to be eligible for license renewal.  The points must include one mandatory point from a Jurisprudence Exercise. For example, if you were first licensed after February 1, 2013, your continuing competence reporting period begins January 1, 2014 and ends January 31, 2016.   There is a 25 month period to complete the continuing competence requirement.  License renewal is EVERY year.
CE for Specialty: Psychology 18 hours of continuing education must be completed every renewal period. All licensees must complete at least 3 hours of CE in ethics. Licenses are renewed biennially. The renewal cycle extends from October 1st of every even numbered year to September 30th of every odd numbered year
CE for Specialty: Radiology Technology Does not license personnel.
CE for Specialty: Respiratory Therapy CE: 12 hours of Category I continuing education (CE) activities related to the licensee’s practice of respiratory care during the preceding annual renewal cycle. 6 contact hours shall be obtained each reporting year from workshops, panel, seminars, lectures, or symposiums that provide for direct interaction between the speakers and the participants. 6 contact hours each reporting year may be obtained from distance education programs Category I Continuing Education may include any one of the following: Lecture Panel Workshop Seminar Symposium Distance Education (maximum of 6 contact hours each annual renewal period) Clinical precepting (3 contact hours may be given for clinical precepting)
CE for Specialty: Social Work Renewal: forty (40) hours social work continuing education must be completed every two (2) years from date of issue. Four (4) hours of ethics focused training. Twenty (20) hours of home study permitted.
