Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC): Optimizing Pharmacotherapeutic Management Strategies (ACPE)

Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is a clinical condition comprised of a myriad of etiologies and subgroup that affects between fourteen and 28 percent of the U.S. population. Not only is it prevalent, but it is also expensive; it results in anywhere between two and a half and seven million healthcare visits each year at a cost of $29 billion. In spite of its widespread impact, it is thought to be underreported due to social perceptions and lack of a clear-cut definition for constipation. Symptoms may arise: as a result of poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, demographic predisposition; secondary to an adverse drug effect; from neuropsychiatric conditions; or completely idiopathically.

Objectives:

1. Describe the pathophysiology of chronic idiopathic constipation
2. Describe the benefits and risks of pharmacotherapy for chronic idiopathic constipation and take them into account when formulating a treatment plan for different patients
3. Formulate an evidence-based treatment plan for a variety of patients with chronic idiopathic constipation.
4. Recommend therapy changes in patients with chronic idiopathic constipation who do not respond to a previously prescribed treatment
