Illinois RN required number of CE credits per year(s) For the upcoming 2014 RN renewal, all CE must have been completed between June 1, 2012 and May 31, 2014. Beginning with the May 31, 2012 renewal, all registered nurses shall complete 20 hours of approved continuing education per 2 year license renewal cycle. All CE must be completed in the 24 months preceding expiration of the license.

CE for Specialty: Athletic Training 40 hours of continuing education must be completed every renewal cycle. Licenses must be renewed every 2 years before expiration of license. A renewal applicant is not required to comply with CE requirements for the first renewal following the original issuance of the license.
CE for Specialty: Audiology/SLP CE: 20 Contact Hours must be completed by the end of the two year renewal period. An audiologist who has met the CEs of the Hearing Instrument Consumer Protection Act during an equivalent licensing cycle shall have met the continuing education requirements.
CE for Specialty: Dietetics/Nutrition 30 hours of continuing education is due by October 31st of each odd year.
CE for Specialty: Emergency Medical Services Sixty days prior to the expiration date on your license, you will receive a renewal notice form in the mail from the Illinois Department of Public Health. CE Requirements for EMTs and Paramedics A total of 120 hours of approved continuing medical education, seminars and workshops, addressing both adult and pediatric care.
CE for Specialty: Laboratory Technology There are no Continuing Education requirements.
CE for Specialty: Massage Therapy CE: 24 Contact Hours must be completed over a two year renewal period. Licenses expire at the end of the calendar year during even numbered years. (e.g.; December 31st, 2012.) 2 hours of Ethics are required each renewal period as well as a limit of 12 hours in a self study program.
CE for Specialty: Medicine and Surgery CE: 150 hours every 3 years (Beginning in 1990.); 60 Hours of required CME shall be obtained in Formal Category I CME programs. Licenses must be renewed every three years. (2014, 2017, 2020, etc.)
CE for Specialty: Occupational Therapy CE Requirements: Every Occupational Therapist (OT) and Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) shall complete 24 contact hours of continuing education (CE) relevant to the practice of occupational therapy during each pre renewal period as a condition of renewal.  License expires on December 31st of every odd-numbered year. A pre renewal period is the 24 months preceding December 31 in the year of the renewal.  24 contact hours of continuing education (CE) is equivalent to 12 units of Continued Competency Activities (CCA) (2 contact hours = 1 unit).
CE for Specialty: Pharmacy 30 hours of pharmacy continuing education must be completed every 2 years. Home study must be approved by the ACPE. ACPE-approved courses for Pharmacy Technicians end in the letter “T”. ACPE-approved courses pharmacists (only) end in the letter “P”.  Courses ending in the letter “P” cannot be used to meet pharmacy technician CE requirements.
CE for Specialty: Pharmacy Technician No continuing education is required.
CE for Specialty: Physical Therapy CE Requirements: Every physical therapist shall complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) relevant to the practice of physical therapy during each pre renewal period as a condition of renewal.  Beginning with the September 2016 renewal, at least 3 hours of the 40 hours must include content related to the ethical practice of physical therapy. Every physical therapist assistant shall complete 20 hours of CE relevant to the practice of physical therapy during each pre renewal period as a condition of renewal.  Beginning with the September 2017 renewal, at least 3 hours of the 20 hours must include content related to the ethical practice of physical therapy.
CE for Specialty: Psychology 24 hours of continuing education are required every renewal period. (Beginning with the September 30, 2014 renewal and every renewal thereafter.) Licensees must complete at least 3 hours of content related to the ethical practice of Clinical Psychology. Licenses must be renewed biennially. The renewal deadline is September 30th of even numbered years. (i.e.: 2014, 2016 etc.)
CE for Specialty: Radiology Technology CE per license: Medical Radiography:  24 CEs                         Nuclear Medicine Technology:  24 CEs                                         Radiation Therapy Technology:  24 CEs                                Chiropractic Radiography:  24 CEs                       Limited Diagnostic Radiography:  12 CEs              Radiologist Assistant:  50 CEs Technologists may also meet CE requirements (24 credits) by passing an additional primary or post-primary (advance level) exam, approved or acceptable to ARRT. A listing of approved or acceptable exams is available from ARRT. Renewal happens every two years.
CE for Specialty: Respiratory Therapy 24 hours of continuing education are due on October 31st of each odd year.  All programs given by approved sponsors shall be open to all licensed respiratory care practitioners and not be limited to the members of a single organization or a group and shall specify the number of CE hours that may be applied toward Illinois CE requirements for licensure renewal.
CE for Specialty: Social Work Renewal: thirty (30) hours of social work continuing education must be completed by November 30 of odd-numbered years. At least 3 of the 30 hours must include content related to the ethical practice of social work. All contact hours can be home study. A renewal applicant shall not be required to comply with CE requirements for the first renewal of an Illinois license.
