Senior Professional Instructor, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Paul Gurny is the Managing Director of Essential Seminars for Physicians, LLC (ES4P). ES4P provides educational seminars to physicians on a number of business issues ranging from finance and accounting to leadership and management. In addition, the LLC instructs physicians on clinical process improvement methodologies. The firm also consults on various health care issues including: design and evaluation of reimbursement methodologies, decision analysis systems, process engineering, outcomes research, leadership development, quality improvement, as well as liability and risk management. Most recently, Mr. Gurny was VP of Quality Measurement and Performance Outcomes for InforMed, a database warehouse and care management firm. He was also Deputy Sec.for Health Care Financing in the MD's DHMH. He oversaw Maryland’s Medicaid program. Paul is also a professional faculty member of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Carey School of Business and was the chief architect of the Hopkins Business of Medicine. Paul has worked for the U.S. Dept. of HHS in HCFA Office of Research and Demonstrations. He received a number of awards including the Department’s highest award for Research Integrity. Mr. Gurny also served as technical advisor to U.S. Dept. HHS CMS Standards and Quality Bureau and has been a referee for the Health Care Financing Review. Mr. Gurny holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the George Washington University. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in health care and a master’s of science in finance, both from Loyola University in Maryland. He is a graduate of the Intermountain Healthcare Delivery Improvement Program.
